Understanding OCD through professional and lived experience
Dr. Shawna Biron · BC Registered Clinical Counsellor
Hi, I’m Shawna, a BC Registered Clinical Counsellor with lived experience of OCD. My perspective is shaped by the intersection of professional knowledge, academic training and personal experience.
I know how important it is to have open conversations about experiences that can often feel difficult to share. Through my work and by speaking openly about OCD, I hope to help reduce stigma and encourage greater understanding.
My hope is that by bringing professional knowledge and personal experience together, we can encourage earlier recognition of OCD and help people feel less alone in what they’re experiencing.

Bringing lived experience to counselling
As both a BC Registered Clinical Counsellor and someone with lived experience of OCD, I bring together two important perspectives: professional knowledge and personal understanding.
OCD can involve experiences that people find difficult to talk about openly. I believe that greater awareness, understanding and honest conversations can help challenge the stigma surrounding these experiences.
Shawna brings both professional counselling knowledge and personal experience of OCD to her perspective, with a focus on reducing stigma, encouraging earlier recognition and helping others feel less alone.
More about my perspective on OCD
Many aspects of OCD and intrusive thoughts can remain hidden, particularly when people feel uncomfortable or afraid to talk about their experiences.
I hope that speaking openly about these subjects can help create greater understanding and make difficult conversations feel more possible.
My perspective is informed by my professional background and my own lived experience of OCD. Both contribute to my commitment to reducing stigma and encouraging earlier recognition.
Above all, I hope people experiencing OCD can recognise that they are not alone.
